Room for Everyone

Cozy yet open, in a Transitional style – that is what the clients were looking for to finish the basement of their recently purchased home. The wish list included a play area for two kids, a family room, a bathroom, a storage room, and a theater room.

The open floorplan concept designed by Luminesio creatively incorporates space for the new family room, and space to function as a kids play area around structural columns detailed with millwork. Visual separation is defined here by a comfortable custom sectional sofa. The seamless look of the paneled wall hosts the linear electric fireplace, TV, and closet for video games and other electronic devices. Touch-latch hardware was added into a couple of panels for easy access behind the wall. A beautiful custom oversized chair serves as an accent piece; and is a perfect place for two to sit and relax, while watching TV, or enjoying the fireplace. The black velvet ottoman enhances the existing overall theme of collaborating textures and patterns, in contrast with the rest of the light finishes of the wall panels, furniture, and area rug.

The main feature in the play area is the all-in-one dry erase and magnetic whiteboard wallcovering. Where the kids can express their creativity and draw to their hearts’ content. There are picture rails and wall pegs to hold containers of markers, crayons, and other crafts. The main feature of this area is the centerpiece table with adjustable legs that can be interchanged and used to grow with the kids as they grow taller themselves. Barn doors were added to hide some of the clutter on the built-in shelves. The existing play kitchen was setup to mirror a farmer’s market; as well as act as an inclusive section of the basement living room for the kids to play, and family to sit and relax nearby.

On the other side of the stairs, a theater room was designed. As you walk in, you feel a strong sense of calmness as if you’re right under a sky full of stars appearing as if you are floating in space. The dark grey carpet complementarily contrasts with the lighter grey herringbone fabric pattern seats and ottomans. The dark navy blue acoustic panels are framed within the soft grey painted wall panels and come to life with a matching drape fabric. The wall sconces add a certain mood and elegance, yet functional for safety and visibility.
